Is it safe to walk your dog? We'll be honest, for the majority of an average Arizona summer day, it is NOT safe to walk your dog. We sympathize that this can be very tough with active dogs, but just look at those temperatures!🥵 Asphalt gets significantly hotter than the already-hot air and can cause damage in as little as 60 seconds! ☀️Some best practices to follow☀️1️⃣Before going out with your dog, place your hand on the ground. If it is hot to the touch, it is too hot for your dog, and could result in blistering and burns.2️⃣If possible, walk your dog early in the morning or late at night after the sun has gone down. 3️⃣Be mindful of your individual dog. Larger dogs, senior dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, dark-hair-colored dogs, dogs with chronic conditions, and dogs with double coats have an extra hard time in the heat.4️⃣Take water with you! Even if it is a cooler part of the day, it is likely still warm in Arizona. 5️⃣Watch for signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. If anything seems off, call us immediately. For dogs, left and right-handedness are relatively balanced: around 70% of dogs did not show a definite paw preference, while left-handedness is much more common in dogs than in humans. In the case of cats, there are a clear gender difference: female cats are significantly more likely to use their right paws, while male cats typically favor the left.
