Bus Rules

It is the right of every student being transported on a bus to receive this service in the safest possible manner. In order to insure this, it is necessary for all students to know, and to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the State and the local Board of Education. Below are copies of the CHAMPS and BUS RIDE posters that will be posted on each bus with additional student expectations following. Parents are urged to help their children understand the importance of these rules as they relate to their personal safety. The bus ride is an extension of the school day. Does Wichita Transit serve as a school bus?

Some school bus services are provided on Wichita Transit instead of a traditional school bus.

Does a student need a bus ticket to ride Wichita Transit to school?

Students who qualify for a school bus and are assigned to a Wichita Transit bus, will get a sticker from their school to put onto their student ID. This sticker is the bus pass. The student must have their ID with the sticker every bus ride and MUST show it to the driver upon entering the bus. It works to/from school and any other time they want to use Transit in the community.

Will other community members ride the transit bus?

Members from the community may ride the transit buses at the same time as our students. The school is simply a stop on the public route.

What keeps children safe on the transit bus?

The buses are safe and clean. The interior is disinfected often. The buses have five cameras and the drivers are trained to keep their passengers safe. The drivers have an emergency button too. Drivers can ask for help from their dispatch team if they should ever need it. Transit buses are also a "SafePlace". SafePlace is a local program that enables kids to get to a safe place when they feel they are lost or in danger.

What if all of the seats are taken?

If all bus seats are taken, remaining passengers can stand on the bus and hold onto the railings and handles available. Transit buses are designed to ride standing or sitting.

The bus can be tracked using the MyStop mobile app, which can be found in the app store or on Google Play.

Is the Transit Bus ride an extension of the school day?

Students are expected to follow all USD 259 school bus rules while using Wichita Transit. Those who are not compliant with the rules may face school disciplinary action. School Administrators can access Wichita Transit bus video through the cloud. Call USD 259 for instructions.
