What festive shows are taking place in the West Midlands in 2024? As the festive season looms, the call of the theatre continues to be strong and loud with all of the Christmas joys and such. It was about time for us to share the West Midland’s offerings to the Theatre and Tonic seasonal table from our writer Clare.
1. Beauty and the Beast, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
30 November - 5th January 2025
Firstly, we have a Pantomime to kick off the festive list. Written and Starring Tam Ryan and Ian Adams, it also stars Gladiators star Giant and musical theatre stars Jarnéia Richard-Noel(Six) and Olivia Mitchell (Waitress UK Tour). This show is waiting for you to be its guest.
2. Peter Pan, Birmingham Hippodrome
21st December - 2nd February 2025
The second panto on the list, the Hippodrome’s offering this year Peter Pan stars Alison Hammond, Danny Mac and Hippodrome favourite Matt Slack and with costumes and set direct from the London Palladium, this show brings all the panto magic to the UK’s second city.
3. A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story, Birmingham Rep
14th November-5th January 2025
Mark Gatiss’ acclaimed spooky retelling of the classic winter tale visits The Rep this winter, with spine tingling special effects and with an age guidance of 12+ this show is a different choice, still sticking with a festive theme.
4. Book of Mormon, Alexandra Theatre Birmingham
3rd - 28th December 2024
If you want to visit the theatre this festive season but want something a little less festive then Book of Mormon UK Tour’s visit to the Alex this December. Created by South Park’s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone alongside Avenue Q co-writer Bobby Lopez, this show is a hilarious alternative Christmas watch.
5. Zanna Don’t!, Old Joint Stock Theatre Birmingham
4th - 15th December 2024
The first of two in-house Christmas musicals at Old Joint Stock Pub and Theatre in Birmingham is Zanna Don’t, a revival of musical fairytale. This show tells the love story between a young man and woman in a world which everything is against them and where the world is completely opposite to the “norm”.
6. Scrooge in Rouge, Old Joint Stock Theatre Birmingham
18 - 30 December 2024
Following Zanna Don’t is the second of the Old Joint Stock’s in-house musicals, this time the UK Premier of Scrooge in Rouge, a rude and raucous spin on the Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol sees naughty jokes and witty songs to make Tiny Tim blush.
7. Beauty and the Beast, Crescent Theatre, Birmingham
10th - 21st December 2024
The second retelling of the tale as old as time on this list. The Crescent Theatre production, first performed in this version by the RSC, brings all the magic to the Birmingham stage on the run up to Christmas.
8. Dick Whittington, Belgrade Theatre Coventry
20th November - 4th January 2025
Complete with festive fun and magical mayhem, the Belgrade Theatre is bringing the well loved story of Dick Whittington to the stage of Coventry this Christmas. Follow Dick on his journey to London alongside his cat and don’t forget to boo and hiss the baddie King Rat!
9. The Nutcracker, Birmingham Hippodrome
22nd November - 14th December 2024
This festive Ballet favourite performed by the Birmingham Royal Ballet and accompanied by the 60 strong Royal Ballet Sinfonia, this is a wonderful way to start of the festive season this year, if pantomimes aren’t your thing.
10. Dick Whittington, Regent Theatre Stoke on Trent
13th December - 5th January 2025
Celebrating 20 years since his first panto appearance, the Regent Theatre production stars Jonathan Wilkes in the titular role alongside others and with costumes, special effects and sets direct from The London Palladium, what more can you ask for your next pantomime adventure.
